Circle the Rim

Circle the Rim consists of parts of the Crater Rim Drive, a paved road that encircles Kilauea Caldera. Travel from lush forest to a seemingly barren desert. Visitors can park their bikes at pullouts and parking lots to take short hikes to volcanic features including Halemaumau Crater. There are two paved hiker/biker trails located along the rim.

Facilities: No facilities are available on the Circle the Rim ride.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Circle the Rim.

Best Time To Visit: The best time to ride Circle the Rim is early in the morning and late afternoon.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Stay alert when cycling in the rain forest because the road is narrow and winding with limited visibility.

Directions: Circle the Rim is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Kailua-Kona, drive southeast for about 96 on HWY 11 (2 to 2 1/2 hour drive).
To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, take Hwy 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo (45 minute drive).
