Malaekahana State Recreation Area is a beautiful, wooded beach park. A sandy beach provides access to a variety of water sports. The southern portion of the park, the Kalanai Point Section, is 0.6 miles north of Laie and the Kahuku section is located 1.3 miles north of Laie.
The Kahuku section is a gated, 37-acre wooded area with 24 hour on-site security. The Kahuku section of the park is managed by the non-profit group Friends of Malaekahana.
In addition to camping, group camping, group events, cabin stays and picnicking, this state recreation area is an excellent place for many types of water sports. The beach is protected by two points so swimming, bodysurfing, board surfing and wind surfing are popular year round. Occasionally, during the winter months, strong currents occur, which make these activities dangerous for anyone less than an expert.

Facilities: The Kalanai Point section of Malaekahana State Recreation Area contains picnicking and camping facilities, as well as bathrooms, showers and barbecue grills. The campground in this section offers 37 sites for tent camping. The Kahuku section offers 30 tent campsites with picnic tables, fire pits, toilets and hot outdoor showers. This is reportedly one of the safest campgrounds in Hawaii.

Best Time To Visit: Malaekahana State Recreation Area is open year round.
