Kanealole Trail is part of the Honolulu Mauka trail system. It begins behind the Oahu Division of Forestry and Wildlife Makiki Office and goes up Makiki Valley. This trail ascends gradually along a stream through dense forest and connects with Makiki Trail after 0.7 miles.
Once it intersects with Makiki Trail, hikers may take the left route which leads to Nahuina Trail and Tantalus Drive. Or hikers may take the right route and proceed east. Makiki Trail will ascend gradually to a 4-way intersection. To return to the parking area from here, take Maunalaha Trail which will descend along a steep ridge back down to the Forestry and Wildlife Baseyard and the parking lot.

Facilities: NO facilities are provided on Kanealole Trail.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Kanealole Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Kanealole Trail is open year round.

Rules: Stay on the trail. Keep dogs on leash. Pack out at least what you pack in. No open fires.

Directions: To reach Kanealole Trail from Honolulu take Punahou Street, heading towards the mountains, turn left on Nehoa St. At the first traffic light, turn right on Makiki Street. Upon reaching the Board of Water supply park, follow the left fork, which is Makiki Heights Road. Continue for approximately 0.5 mile until the road makes a sharp hairpin turn to the left (look for a row of mailboxes on the right side of the road). At the hairpin turn, continue straight ahead through a green iron gate (there is a sign that says Makiki Forest Recreation Area). Continue almost to the end of this road. Just past the Hawaii Nature Center trailers, on the right, there is a large parking area for trail users.
