Mauna Kea State Recreation Area

Mauna Kea State Recreation Area encompasses 20 acres within the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve but also very close to the Pohakuloa Military Reservation.

Facilities: Mauna Kea State Recreation Area offers picnic tables and cabins for lodging opportunities. The cabins at Mauna Kea are available for rental as individual cabins or together for a larger group. A maximum of 64 persons can be accommodated in the four cabins at Kalopa. These accommodations consist of eight-person units with beds, bedding, linens, toilet facilities and hot showers. A centrally located recreational dining hall is fully equiped for cooking and serving the entire group.

Reservations: Mauna Kea State Recreation Area requires reservations for the cabins.

Best Time To Visit: Mauna Kea State Recreation Area is open year round.

Fees: A nightly fee is charged for the rental cabins.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Rental Cars are not permitted on Saddle Road, as it is recommended for four wheel drive vehicles only.

Directions: To reach Mauna Kea State Recreation Area from Hilo, take Hwy 19 to Hwy 200 (Saddle Rd). This area is approximately 35 miles west of Hilo off of Saddle Road.
