| Welcome to Southeast Colorado! Southeast Colorado boasts wind-swept plains and the title of the cradle of Colorado's history. In was in this region, in the 1540s, that the first gold seekers came to make their fortune: Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his band of conquistadores. It was here, in 1806, that Colorado received its first emissaries from the United States - the expedition led by Zebulon Pike. And it was here, in 1833, that the first American settlement was raised - Bent's Old Fort. |

| The Arkansas River, and the Santa Fe Trail that ran alongside, represent a line into the past. Must see attractions include Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site and the Highway of Legends, which loops from Trinidad to Walsenburg, providing 82 miles of awe along Highway 12 on a route traveled by Native Americans, Spanish explorers and Mexican and Anglo settlers. Visitors will pass historic towns, recreational areas and natural wonders like the Spanish Peaks as wend through the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and The Comanche National Grassland. |
