The historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, one of the nations most popular and most scenic track trips, winds 45 miles from Durango through the Alps-like San Juan Mountains to Silverton on some of the original 1882 coaches and steam engines. Durango is also home to Fort Lewis College and is a gateway community to Mesa Verde National Park.

About 30 miles north of Durango, past Trimble Hot Springs, is the medium-sized and recently renovated ski area, Durango Mountain. But Durango is more popular for its world-class mountain biking, with numerous trails leaving right from town. Rafting the Animas, Dolores, or Piedras Rivers are also a fun summer sport, especially during the Animas River Days in late June.
Do you like geocaching? Durango, Colorado offers over 400 opportunities for geocaching. When you visit Durango, be sure to bring your GPS and look for geocaches near Durango.
The Animas Museum is devoted to preserving the history of the whole San Juan Basin. Two historic districts - Main Avenue and Third Avenue - complete this Old West-meets-New West town.
