Spanish for the junction, La Junta actually marks the spot where the historic Santa Fe Trail divides into the Navajo Trail. U.S. Highways 50 and 350 are their modern equivalents as the route follows the rolling hills along the Arkansas River.

La Junta is best known for Bents Old Fort, a National Historic Site located nine miles outside town. The massive adobe fort, once an influential frontier trading post with Mexico, has been carefully reconstructed to preserve the areas unique heritage; living history programs help project what the settlement of the West was really like.
Area lakes and reservoirs are big draws for La Junta, while the sturdy grasslands remind visitors of the first pioneer adventures on these plains.
Do you like geocaching? La Junta, Colorado offers over 100 opportunities for geocaching. When you visit La Junta, be sure to bring your GPS and look for geocaches near La Junta.
The Koshare Indian Museum features an impressive collection of Native American art and artifacts, mostly from the Plains and Pueblo tribes. The museum also hosts an interpretive, and nationally recognized, Native American dance group.
