Spanish for the junction, La Junta actually marks the spot where the historic Santa Fe Trail divides into the Navajo Trail. U.S. 50 and 350 are their modern equivalents as the route follows the rolling hills along the Arkansas River.

The town is best known for Bents Old Fort, a National Historic Site located nine miles outside town. The massive adobe fort, once an influential frontier trading post with Mexico, has been carefully reconstructed to preserve the areas unique heritage; living history programs help project what the settlement of the West was really like.
Area lakes and reservoirs are big draws here, while the sturdy grasslands remind visitors of the first pioneer adventures on these plains. A performance theatre, art center, and golf course are all available in La Junta, and The Koshare Indian Museum features an impressive collection of Native American art and artifacts, mostly from the Plains and Pueblo tribes. The museum also hosts an interpretive and nationally recognized Native American dance group.
