Right off a major highway, on the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this Old World, Spanish-influenced town is very much tied to its heritage. Rolling brick streets and historic buildings culminate in the National Historic District, known as the Corazon de Trinidad Historic District (downtown); here visitors will get a flavor for a town thats very different from what most people expect in Colorado.

The large number of museums for the relatively small size of this town shows Trinidads commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. Four sites along one city block make up the Trinidad History Museum, the Santa Fe Trail Museum, Baca House (1870), Bloom House (1882), and Baca House/Bloom House Historic Gardens. Overlooking the Santa Fe Trail, these venues are authentic interpretive cultural centers, but there are also museums for art, regional archaeology/natural history, and children.
Trinidad Lake State Recreation Area is a sizable natural area for hiking and biking as well as boating and fishing in the 900-acre lake. For a beautiful mountain drive, follow Colorado 12 into the San Isabel National Forest.
