| | The Royal Gorge Bridge, the worlds highest suspension bridge, hangs between sheer, 1,053-foot granite faces here; visitors can explore the man-made wonder by walking across it or driving over it. The gorge can be explored by riding an aerial tram (the worlds steepest) to the bottom, rafting through it, or riding the Royal Gorge Route - a 12-mile train trip through the canyon. Shops and a theme park, plus plenty of surrounding national forest land, fill up spaces around the bridge.Rafting is by far the most popular outdoor adventure in the area, and numerous outfitters line U.S. 50 to help guide you through the rapids. The trails at Red Canyon Park and Temple Canyon are both good choices for short day hikes. You can fish the Arkansas River, but your best bet is to head west of town. | | | | |
