| | This northeastern Plains agricultural and ranching town, located on a plateau above the South Platte River, is one of those quiet little communities where time seems to stand still. The town is named for a fort that once protected mail and stagecoach passenger routes along the South Platte branch of the Overland Trail. There are three area museums: Fort Morgan Museum, host to diverse historical material, from Plains Indians arrowheads to an old frontier fort; Oasis on the Plains, featuring farm-type relics and housed on a working ranch; and the appointment-only U.S. Military Museum. For further exploration, the Fort Morgan Museum can provide a detailed map of 44 historic downtown sites. Also nearby, the South Plattes Rainbow Bridge, a rare example of rainbow arch architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. From town, follow the Pioneer Trail Scenic and Historic Byway north to the famed Pawnee Buttes at the Pawnee National Grassland. Jackson Lake, to the northwest, is a pleasant spot for fishing. Theres also a boat ramp, sandy beaches, and campsites on the west shore. | | | | |
