At the junction of four highways, Walsenburg has become a hub for the south central region. Founded by Spanish farmers, the town was renamed for one of the towns first merchants, Fred Walsen. On the west side of town, off Colorado 12, City Park provides shady relief from summer heat that characterizes the southern Colorado plains.

About five miles to the west of town are two lakes, Martin and Horseshoe, and Lathrop State Park. With nice views of the Spanish Peaks, Lathrop is a relaxing stop for summer tourists. Boating, fishing, picnicking, and golfing are all available here, and about 100 campsites make it easy to extend your stay. A nine-hole golf course offers rentals and a clubhouse restaurant, and is open most of the year.
The Walsenburg Mining Museum, housed in an 1896 jail, recounts through exhibits the history of southern Colorados important coal-mining industry.
