| | Sterling, a small northeastern farm community with a down-home charm all its own, is actually the largest city in this corner of the state. A few special highlights have marked this town over the years, including about a dozen "living trees" sculptures - trees carved into forms ranging from a clan of giraffes to "The Golfer" are scattered throughout town. Two sculptures make their home in shady and simple downtown Columbine Park.Four area golf courses are available. North Sterling, Jumbo, and Prewitt Reservoirs offer boating, camping, and warm-water fishing. Some rather out-of-place geological wonders in the midst of this flat farming land are the 250-foot chalk cliffs at Chimney Canyons, about eight miles outside town.Sterling's Overland Trail Museum is not only one of the state's best small-venue museums, but it's a great place to stop for more information on the area. Housed in a stone re-creation of Fort Sedgwick, the center highlights the importance of the Overland Trail in helping overcome conflict between Indians and settlers in the 1860s. | | | | |
