Fishing In National Forests Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and The Pawnee National Grassland The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland encompass roughly 1.5 million acres of public land in the Rocky Mountains, foothills and short grass prairie of north central Colorado. This area offers a wide variety of recreation for all types of visitors. Return to Top of Page Fishing In State Parks Boyd Lake State Park This park boasts over 1,700 surface-acres of water for boating, fishing, sailing and more. A sandy beach and seasonably warm water make Boyd Lake a favorite among windsurfers, water-skiers and swimmers. Modern camping facilities, picnic areas, a playground and a trail system round out the activities. Lory State Park This park is located along the edge of Horsetooth Reservoir in Larimer County. Extensive trails offer visitors terrain for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. Return to Top of Page Fishing In Wilderness Areas Comanche Peak Wilderness Area With 66,791-acres, this area was named after its prominent 12,702 foot peak, which is its highest point. Rawah Wilderness Area The Rawah Wilderness Area preserves a 76,394-acre area located on the east side of the Medicine Bow Mountains in north central Colorado. This area offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities for all season. Return to Top of Page Fishing In Wildlife Preserves & Refuges Bliss State Wildlife Area Steep canyon walls that lead down to the Poudre River run through this 460 acre area where there are hunting and fishing opportunities. Cherokee State Wildlife Area-Middle Unit This area has 4,481 acres of camping, wildlife viewing, and hunting opportunities. Cherokee State Wildlife Area-Upper Unit This area has 4,960 acres of camping, wildlife viewing, and hunting opportunities. Douglas Lake State Wildlife Area This is the largest State Wildlife Area in the farmlands north of Fort Collins. The lake at this State Wildlife Area is stocked with rainbow trout. Dowdy Lake State Wildlife Area Wildlife viewing, fishing, and hunting are some of the things available in this area. Frank State Wildlife Area Catfish and smallmouth bass fishing is the main recreation for this State Wildlife area. Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area Hunting, fishing and wildlife watching is plentiful in this State Wildlife Area. Lonetree Reservoir State Wildlife Area Lonetree State Wildlife Area's fishery has been called one of the best warm water fishery on the Front Range. Watson Lake State Wildlife Area This State wildlife Area is well developed and has a park like feel. Wellington Reservoir #4 & Smith Lake State Wildlife Area There are several small reservoirs along the river in this State Wildlife Area that are stocked with warm water fish. West Lake State Wildlife Area Wildlife viewing, fishing, and camping are some of the things available in this area. Return to Top of Page Lakes & Reservoirs Boyd Lake This lake is a popular spot with anglers for bass, catfish, crappie, perch, rainbow trout and walleye. Horsetooth Reservoir Located in the foothills west of Fort Collins at an elevation of 5,430 feet, this reservoir is 1,900 acres of water surrounded by 2,000 acres of public land. On the west side, accessible by foot only, there are five coves that offer bass, trout, and walleye fishing. Return to Top of Page
