Camping In Wilderness Areas Uncompahgre Wilderness The Uncompahgre Wilderness comprises of 102,525 acres on the Uncompahgre National Forest. This area offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. Return to Top of Page Camping In Wildlife Preserves & Refuges Brown Lakes State Wildlife Area This area is a shallow reservoir located in the valley of Hermit Lakes Creek in the headwaters of the Rio Grande. The lake is managed as a cold-water fishery and has easy access on county roads. Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area Coldwater lake fishing is available for wild brook trout and stocker rainbows. Road Canyon Reservoir State Wildlife Area This State Wildlife Area is managed as a put-and-grow fishery and stocked periodically with fingerling rainbows. River Hill Campground There are 20 sites which have tables and fire rings. Most sites will accommodate any sized trailer up to 32 feet and some sites can take a 35 foot unit. Drinking water is provided with two wells and sink water disposal is possible. Silver Thread Campground This facility has 11 camping units each with a parking spur, table and fire ring. A vault type toilet is provided. Drinking water comes from a spring and is piped with faucets; it is turned off after Labor Day.
