 | | Helca Junction Campground is located within the Arkansas Headwaters State Recreation Area. Visitors can expect to see all sorts of rafting and kayaking activity here. Once the boats come off the water, life returns to normal, and the camping experience begins. Fishing has been known to be pretty good in this stretch of the river, and several hiking opportunities are available around the site.The Arkansas Headwaters State Recreation Area stretches for almost 150 miles along the Arkansas River, and offers abundant and outstanding opportunities for fishing, rafting, kayaking, picnicking, hiking, camping, mountain biking, and sightseeing among deep canyons, broad valleys and towering mountain peaks. The cities and towns along the river - Leadville, Buena Vista, Poncha Springs, Salida, Canon City, Florence and Pueblo - offer dining, lodging and hospitality.This campground offer 22 individual campsites, each complete with a tent pad, fire grill and table. All of these sites are designated for trailers/RV's. There are no hook-ups here. |

Reservations are accepted from early April through late September. For the remainder of the year, the park uses the "first-come, first-serve" rule. Best Time To Visit: Helca Junction Campground is open year-round. Fees: An overnight camping fee is charged. Accessibility: This campground is accessible for disabled persons. Please contact Park Rangers for further information. Rules: Since rules may vary depending on which park guests choose to visit, please check with the Park Manager for any other rules that may apply. Directions: To reach Helca Junction Campground from Salida, travel on State Highway 291 to US Highway 285. The exit for Helca Junction is located on Highway 285 about a mile north of the Highway 291 exit, between mile markers 135 and 136. Turn east onto County Road 194. Drive 2.4 miles to the end of the road at Helca Junction. Caution :This is a narrow, fairly steep (12% grade) dirt road with a quite a bit of traffic. Low gear is recommended for the descent. | | |
