Black Mountain Creek Trail begins just opposite the Sheriff Reservoir dam. The first mile of trail follows an old logging road as it winds through a large meadow. This area is very beautiful in July and August due to the variety of wildflowers that can be found.

The trail becomes very steep as it crosses a shale outcrop at mile 1.4. Great care must be taken when crossing this spot, especially for horse riders, after a rain or snow. The trail turns south and traverses an area known as Windy Gap. From here visitors can look to the west into Bunker Creek and to the east into the Trout Creek drainage.

The trail enters the Flat Tops Wilderness at mile 2.5, the highest point in the trail, at an elevation of 11,125 feet. Looking to the north visitors can see Dunckley Pass and the Dunckley Flat Tops. To the east they can see Sand Point. Pyramid Peak is only a 1 mile hike to the west.

Continuing, the trail descends into the East Fork Williams Fork drainage, traveling through open parks and finally through spruce/fir forest to join with trail 1119.

This 5.9 mile trail is located within the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. The beginning elevation is 9,780 feet and the ending elevation is 9,730 feet.

Facilities: Facilities can be found in Yampa before departure.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to use Black Mountain Creek Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Black Mountain Creek Trail is open from June through November.

Fees: There are use no fees associated with this trail.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Pets must be restrained or on a leash at all times while in developed recreation areas.

Directions: To reach Black Mountain Creek Trail from Steamboat Springs, travel south on State Highway 131 to Yampa. Take County Road 17 north from Yampa to County Road 132, 5 miles. Follow 132 west to Forest Highway 16, 3.4 miles. Follow 16 to Sheriff Reservoir Road 959, 6 miles. Follow 959 south to trailhead parking at Sheriff Reservoir, 2.6 miles.
