Buffalo Creek to Welington Lake Road is the third segment of the Colorado Trail. It leads 13.5 miles west from the Buffalo Creek Area to the Rolling Creek Trailhead, which is immediately east of the Lost Creek Wilderness. The trail begins in the eastern section of the Buffalo Creek Mountain Bike Area. Approximately 10 miles of the trail leads through, and is part of, the mountain bike area, which means heavy mountain bike traffic during the weekends. So visitors may want to plan their trip accordingly.
The eastern access to this segment of the trail lies at approximately 7,920 feet in elevation. The terrain remains relatively level as visitors travel through the Buffalo Creek Area. The trail leads across 2 stream crossings, the second being Buffalo Creek. The entrance to the Meadows Group Campground will be immediately after the first crossing. This is where mountain bikers should leave the trail so as not to enter the Lost Creek Wilderness.
The terrain gets somewhat steeper after Buffalo Creek. After Buffalo Creek the trail ascends from 7,400' to 8,200' before it descends to cross Wellington Lake Road (543). The Rolling Creek Trailhead is located about .25 miles beyond the road crossing.
This trail has been rated easy to moderate. There is a 440 foot elevation change along this 13.5-mile trail.
