Bear River Trail shares the trailhead with Trail #1119 at Stillwater Reservoir and carries along the north side of the reservoir for the first .08 miles. There is a sign-in board at the junction of 1119 and 1120. Here the trail enters stands of spruce and fir.
For the most part, the next part of the trail parallels Bear River to Mosquito Lake. At mile 1.5 it reaches Mosquito Lake. From here, visitors begin their ascent out of the Bear River Valley. At mile 3.0 the trail reaches its high point of 11,400 feet. At mile 3.3 visitors will come to the Yampa River/White River watersheds divide as well as the Forest Boundary with the White River National Forest.
This 3.0 mile trail is located within the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. The beginning elevation is 10,280 feet and the ending elevation is 11,400 feet.
