Big Thompson Ponds State Wildlife Area

Smallmouth bass, sunfish, and largemouth bass, are the warm water fish in the ponds at Big Thompson Ponds State Wildlife Area. Bird watching at this State Wildlife Area includes cormorants, great blue herons, shorebirds, and waterfowl. Dove, rabbit, and waterfowl are seen and hunted here. This 50 acres of land is just 4 miles east of Loveland.

Facilities: A restroom is provided in the Big Thompson Ponds State Wildlife Area parking area.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to use Big Thompson Ponds State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Big Thompson Ponds State Wildlife Area is open year-round. Public access is prohibited from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise daily except when fishing or when authorized by a night hunting permit.

Fees: There are no fees to enter a State Wildlife Area. There are fees to obtain fishing and hunting licenses. Please contact the Denver office for further information.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Boating is prohibited except for belly boats used for fishing. All bass less than 15 inches must be released immediately. Camping, paintball shooting, fires, dog training, bicycle riding, and horseback riding is prohibited.

Discharge of firearms or bows is prohibited except when hunting. Users of wildlife areas are reminded to check current hunting, fishing, and land use regulations when planning any type of recreational use in this State Wildlife Area.

Directions: To reach Big Thompson Ponds State Wildlife Area from Loveland, travel on US Highway 34 to Interstate 25. From Interstate 25 at the State Highway 402 exit (exit #255), take east service road north 3/4 mile north to Interstate underpass, cross west (left) through underpass, then 1/4 mile north (right) on the west service road to the property.
