| Cherokee State Wildlife Area-Upper Unit has 4,960 acres of camping, wildlife viewing, and hunting opportunities. This mountainous area has elevations from 6,200 to 8,600 feet. Deer, elk, mountain lions, blue grouse, rabbits, and doves can be spotted and hunted in this State Wildlife Area. This area is also the home to the endangered Preble's meadow jumping mouse. Many different streams run through this area where there are opportunities in greenback cutthroat trout fishing. This is strictly catch and release for the cutthroat. Regular limits of brown and brook trout are legal with permits. The best time to catch the big ones here are in the spring when they migrate upriver. |
