Located in the Roosevelt and Routt National Forests, the Rawah Wilderness Area is a stunning area with sculpted u-shaped valleys, impressive cirque lakes and peaks reaching 12,951 feet. The area has 25 named lakes, ranging in size from 5 to 39 acres and the headwaters of McIntyre, Rawah, Fall Creeks, and the Laramie River.
The Rawah preserves a 76,394-acre area located on the east side of the Medicine Bow Mountains in north central Colorado. It is part of a larger roadless are that includes portions of the Colorado State Forest. Elevations range from 8,400 to 12,951-feet atop Clark Peak. The lower elevations areas dominated by dense stands of lodgepole pine, while progressively higher elevations are covered by spruce/fir forests, alpine tundra, and barren rock formations.
Wildlife includes elk, mule deer, black bear, bighorn sheep, moose, bobcat, and beaver. Many species of birds make the Rawah their home, including the red-tailed hawk, white-tailed ptarmigan, and golden eagle. Lakes and streams are inhabited by native cutthroat trout and introduced rainbow, brook, and brown trout.
There are about 75 miles of trails within the Wilderness Area. Most of the trails are snow free by the end of June. In winter the Cameron Pass area is a favorite of Cross-Country Skiers and Snowshoers alike.
