The 6,000-acre Platoro Reservoir offers visitors great fishing, hiking, and boating. The Platoro Reservoir is located in a high mountain valley with broad vistas of the San Juan Mountains. Since the recreation season is short and the location remote, use is low to moderate. Elk, mule deer, and beaver are plentiful in this area and provide the perfect opportunity for nature study.
A wilderness area is located to the south of the reservoir area providing visitors even more chances to glimpse wildlife in their natural habitat. Guest ranches, fishing lodges, and camping areas offer the summer vacationer the ultimate high country mountain vacation experience.
