Pawnee Buttes Trail

Pawnee Buttes Trail is an easy one and a half-mile trail The trail provides an opportunity to view the Buttes up close. The Buttes stand approximately 300 feet above the surrounding prairie. As the rock is crumbling sandstone, climbing on the Buttes is not recommended. Take a hat, sunscreen lotion and water.

Facilities: There are no facilities available at Pawnee Buttes Trail.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to use Pawnee Buttes Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Pawnee Buttes Trail is open year-round (The overlook and the cliffs are closed to public access March 1 - June 30 to protect the nesting birds.) Temperatures topping one hundred degrees can be encountered in July and August.

Fees: No fees are charged to hike this trail.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Mountain bikes are not allowed on the trail. HAWKS AND FALCONS NEST IN THE ROCKY CLIFFS. PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB THEM.

Directions: To get to Pawnee Buttes Trail from:

Greeley drive north on US-85, turn right on Colorado-14 towards Briggsdale. The Pawnee Buttes are approximately 30 miles northeast of the Crow Valley Recreation Area and Briggsdale, Colorado.
Sterling travel west on Colorado-14 to Briggsdale. The Pawnee Buttes Trail is approximately 30 miles northeast of the Crow Valley Recreation Area and Briggsdale, CO.
