Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area is near the Wyoming Border, and has two lakes and the Laramie River running through it. Because of this, there are many fishing opportunities. Hohnholz Lake #2 has cacheable rainbow trout stocked and sub-cacheable Snake River Cutthroats. Ice fishing is available in this lake during the early winter months. Hohnholz Lake #3 is a quality fishery managed with brown trout and Snake River Cutthroats. The Laramie River itself has brown trout and there is a good hatch of giant stoneflies.

Wildlife watching is plentiful and includes golden eagles, American white pelicans, ducks, and pronghorn antelope. Sandhill cranes are seen in June. Ducks include cinnamon teal and common goldeneyes. Waterfowl hunting is acceptable in the area following regulation.

Facilities: Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area provides restrooms located at parking areas and at the designated camping areas.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to use Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area is open year-round.

Fees: There are no fees to enter a State Wildlife Area. There are fees to obtain fishing and hunting licenses. Please contact the Denver office for further information.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Camping is permitted in designated areas only. Boating is prohibited except for craft propelled by hand, wind or electric motor. Sailboards are prohibited. Fishing in Hohnholz #3 and in the Laramie River is by artificial flies and lures only. Users of wildlife areas are reminded to check current hunting, fishing, and land use regulations when planning any type of recreational use in this State Wildlife Area.

Directions: To reach Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area from Fort Collins, travel north on south Sherwood Street toward west Oak Street. Turn left onto west Mountain Avenue. Turn right onto north Shields Street/County Road 17. Turn left onto State Highway 14. Turn slight right. Stay straight to go onto State Highway 14. Continue to follow State Highway 14 west. Turn Left onto State Highway 14. From State Highway 14 at Chambers Lake, at the upper end of Pourdre Canyon, go 30 miles north on the Laramie River Road (County Road 103) to the property.
