The Michigan and Illinois Rivers run through Diamond J State Wildlife Area where coldwater fishing for rainbow and brown trout are both available. Hunting includes waterfowl, sage grouse, and rabbits.

Facilities: There are no facilities at Diamond J State Wildlife Area. Camping is permitted in the city-owned camping areas. Signs are posted in the parking areas. Camping and restrooms are located at Cowdrey Reservoir.

Reservations: No reservations are needed or accepted to visit Diamond J State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Diamond J State Wildlife Area is open year-round.

Fees: No fees are charged to visit this area, however, depending on visitors recreation preferences, license fees may be applicable.

Accessibility: There is no handicap access to this area.

Rules: Hunting is prohibited east of Highway 125. Fishing is by artificial flies and lures only. ENTRY INTO AREA HOLDING DOMESTIC ELK IS PROHIBITED. Mechanical devices are prohibited in State Wildlife Areas.

Directions: To get to Diamond J State Wildlife Area from Steamboat Springs: Go north on Highway 125. Parking areas are located at one, two, and four miles north of Walden on Highway 125.
