| Facilities: There are no facilities available at Mt. Elbert Trail. Best Time To Visit: Mt. Elbert Trail is open spring, summer, early fall, and winter. Fees: Commercial and organized groups must obtain a permit through the Leadville Ranger District Office in advance of their trip. Accessibility: Parts of this trail are handicap accessible. Rules: Unknown Directions: To reach Mt. Elbert Trail (South Elbert Trail)(5.5 miles) from Leadville, travel south on U.S. Highway 24 to the junction of Colorado Highway 82. Travel west approximately 3.5 miles to Lake County Road 24. Turn right (north) on Lake County 24 and follow it approximately 1.1 miles to the scenic parking area just north of Lakeview Campground. The South Elbert Trail will follow the Colorado Trail (signs) heading north for 2.3 miles at which point the South Elbert Trail branches to the left (west) climbing more steeply. The first 1.8 miles of trail can be traveled with a 4WD starting on Forest Road 125.1B just north of the parking area described above. To reach Mt. Elbert Trail (Black Cloud Trail)(5.5 miles) from Leadville, travel south on U.S. Highway 24 (approx. 15 miles) to the junction of Colorado Highway 82. Travel west towards Independence Pass for about 10 miles. Just west of the Twin Peaks Campground watch for a small Black Cloud sign. The trail climbs north following the Black Cloud Creek.To reach Mt. Elbert Trail (North Elbert Trail) (5 miles) from Leadville, travel 3.9 miles south on U.S. Highway 24. Turn right (west) on State Road 300 toward the Leadville National Fish Hatchery and follow for .75 mile. Take a left (south) onto Lake County Road #11, the paved road signed for Halfmoon Creek. Follow this road for 1.25 miles and take a right (west) onto Forest Road 110 toward the Halfmoon campgrounds and picnic areas.
