Cabin Creek State Wildlife Area sits in the foothills on the eastern rim of the Gunnison Basin. The terrain consists of low ridges and hills separating creeks and gulches. Vegetation is a mixture of grassy meadows, sage, aspen, and coniferous forest. The wildlife area is an important winter range for elk and deer.
