Bitter Brush State Wildlife Area used to exist as a Ranching for Wildlife property until the DOW purchased it in 1999. The purpose for this acquisition was to protect a critical wintering range for elk, deer, and antelope and to provide hunting opportunities. Deception Creek runs north through the property before joining the Yampa River.


Facilities: Overnight camping is prohibited. The town of Maybell, located just six miles away, caters to hunters by offering restrooms, showers, and drinking water, and camping right on the town square.

Best Time To Visit: Bitter Brush State Wildlife Area is open April through January. Public access is prohibited January 15th through April 30th to protect wintering game.

Fees: There are no fees to enter this area, but hunting/fishing permits will require a fee.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Unknown

Directions: To reach Bitter Brush State Wildlife Area from Steamboat Springs, travel west to Craig. From Craig go 27 miles west on US 40 to County Road 57, then one mile south to the first parking area.
