Bitter Brush State Wildlife Area used to exist as a Ranching for Wildlife property until the DOW purchased it in 1999. The purpose for this acquisition was to protect a critical wintering range for elk, deer, and antelope and to provide hunting opportunities. Deception Creek runs north through the property before joining the Yampa River.
