Jerome B. Wheeler built, Wheeler/Stallard Museum a Queen Anne style home in 1888. Despite his plans, his wife Harriet Macy Valentine Wheeler refused to leave their mansion in Manitou Springs, Colorado and the family never lived here. Edgar and Mary Ella Stallard moved into the house in 1905, eventually purchasing it in 1917. The family lived here for forty years. The house last served as the residence of the Aspen Institute's president before the Aspen Historical Society purchased it in 1969.
The museum now hosts the Spirit of Aspen exhibit which focuses thematically on the character and spirit of the community throughout its 100+ history through historic artifacts, audio, video and interactive presentations.
