| This section of South Cottonwood to Chalk Creek is a one of the least traveled and the route passes through heavily forest areas along the northern section of the trail. Hikers should watch for an information sign that details the route as its descent into the Chalk Creek Canyon. The trail continues into the canyon via County Road 162. This is a heavily used, paved road.As visitors descend into the canyon, the stark, white Chalk Cliff will come into view. The chalky cliffs were formed as a result of geothermal activity. There are numerous hot springs in the canyon but all are private and the Mount Princeton Hot Springs resort is a popular stopping place for weary hikers.Camping is permitted about 1/2 mile south of the Chalk Creek trailhead at Bootleg Campground. The campsite has 6 tent pads, a vault toilet, large fire rings with benches. This is a moderately difficult 12-mile trail, with elevations ranging from 8,170 to 8,900 feet. |
