This section of South Cottonwood to Chalk Creek is a one of the least traveled and the route passes through heavily forest areas along the northern section of the trail. Hikers should watch for an information sign that details the route as its descent into the Chalk Creek Canyon. The trail continues into the canyon via County Road 162. This is a heavily used, paved road.
As visitors descend into the canyon, the stark, white Chalk Cliff will come into view. The chalky cliffs were formed as a result of geothermal activity. There are numerous hot springs in the canyon but all are private and the Mount Princeton Hot Springs resort is a popular stopping place for weary hikers.
Camping is permitted about 1/2 mile south of the Chalk Creek trailhead at Bootleg Campground. The campsite has 6 tent pads, a vault toilet, large fire rings with benches.
This is a moderately difficult 12-mile trail, with elevations ranging from 8,170 to 8,900 feet.

Facilities: There are no facilities available along South Cottonwood to Chalk Creek. Bootleg Campground is located about 1/2 mile south of the Chalk Creek trailhead.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to hike South Cottonwood to Chalk Creek.

Best Time To Visit: South Cottonwood to Chalk Creek is open spring, summer, early fall and winter.

Fees: A parking fee may be charged.

Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible.

Directions: To get to South Cottonwood to Chalk Creek from (north) Leadville & (south) Salida: Take Highway 24 as it travels north and south through Buena Vista. A single stoplight is located on this highway, near the center of Buena Vista. From the stoplight, turn west, traveling toward Cottonwood Pass. The road travels along the western edge of Buena Vista and then continues as County Road 306 (Cottonwood Pass).

To access the trail from Chalk Creek, travel west from Nathrop on County Road 162, for approximately 6.5 miles. An information kiosk and parking area is located on the right side of County Road 162. Across from the kiosk is County Road 291. County Road 291 drops steeply to the left of County Road 162. Take CR 291 down to the Colorado Trail trailhead. Camping is not permitted at the trailhead.
To access the trail from South Cottonwood, travel west on County Road 306 for 7 miles, then turn left on County Road 344. The trail crosses the road about 1/2 mile south.
