The San Juan National Forest encompass some 2.5 million acres. This terrain ranges from high-desert mesas to alpine peaks, with thousands of miles of back roads and hundreds of miles of trails to explore.
The San Juan National Forest offers many recreational opportunities. Numerous campgrounds and picnic sites are scattered throughout the forest. Fishing for trout in high mountain lakes, swift streams or reservoirs offers the angler many challenges. Hunters enjoy hunting mule deer, elk, bear, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, grouse, turkey and ducks.
A 236-mile loop road, the San Juan Skyway, takes travelers over high mountain passes and through historic towns. Ghost towns from Colorado's mining days, ancient Navajo dwellings and Chimney Rock Archaeological Area are some of the recreational activities within the San Juan National Forest.
The San Juan National Forest also offers a variety of hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and four-wheel-drive trails. Visitors hike the Colorado Trail. In winter, they heli-ski or cross-country ski in the backcountry or try Durango's downhill runs.
