Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area

Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area a 40-acre reservoir rests in a high meadow just below the Continental Divide in the headwaters of the Rio Grande. This reservoir is managed as a put-and-grow trout fishery and is stocked periodically with fingerling rainbows and cutthroats. There is also a decent population of self-sustaining brook trout.

Facilities: Primitive camping is permitted in Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area.

Reservations: Reservations are needed or accepted to visit Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area is open year round.

Fees: There are no fees to enter a State Wildlife Refuge. There are fees to obtain fishing and hunting licenses. Please contact the Denver office for further information.

Accessibility: This area has limited handicap accessibility.

Rules: Users of wildlife areas are reminded to check current hunting, fishing, and land use regulations when planning to use an area for any purpose.

Directions: To get to Rito Hondo State Wildlife Area from:

Ouray drive north on US-550, turn right onto US-50. At Colorado State Highway 149 turn right, travel to Creede. Drive south on State Highway 149, then northwest two miles on U.S. Forest Service Road 513 to the fork, then take right fork north to reservoir.
Pagosa Springs drive northeast on US-160, turn right onto Colorado State Highway 149 to Creede. From Creede, 35 miles west on State Highway 149, then northwest two miles on U.S. Forest Service Road 513 to the fork, then take right fork north to reservoir.
