Pion Flats Campground is located about 1 mile north of the Visitor Center, with excellent views of the dunefield. 88 sites are located along two loops, with rest rooms and drinking water available in each loop. Many of these sites can accommodate RV's up to 32' in length. Although the campground is open year-round, the water will be turned off during the freezing months; usually October through mid-April. Campsites have a capacity of six people, two tents, and two cars.
Individual campsites are occupied on a first come, first served basis; there are no reservations for individual sites. Note that the campground generally fills in early afternoon on Fridays and Saturdays from late May through mid September. Arrive early and try to plan your visit on a weekday to avoid crowds.
Black bears are common visitors in the campground area. Visitors should safeguard themselves and the bears by storing all food and aromatic cosmetics in the trunks of cars when visitors are not eating. If vehicles lack a trunk, store the food inside the body of the car and keep it hidden from sight. Try to minimize food odors in sites and vehicles. Do not leave food, coolers, or trash in unattended sites.
