Piceance State Wildlife Area

Piceance State Wildlife Area is a complicated array of both large and small parcels of land scattered across the Piceance Plateau. The main body of land, and the largest, is the Little Hills Experimental Station Tract, located just south of White River.

Facilities: Primitive campsites are available, but there are no facilities provided in Piceance State Wildlife Area.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Piceance State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Piceance State Wildlife Area is open year round.

Fees: There are no fees to enter this area, but hunting/fishing permits will require a fee.

Accessibility: This area has limited handicap accessibility.

Rules: Users of wildlife areas are reminded to check current hunting, fishing, and land use regulations when planning to use an area for any purpose. Division employees of this wildlife refuge reside in homes on the property. Visitors are asked to respect their privacy. Campfires are permitted in designated areas only. Non-paved roads may become impassable when wet. Caution should be exercised when traveling off maintained roads.

Directions: To get to Piceance State Wildlife Area from Steamboat Springs: Drive west on US-40, turn left onto Colorado-13, travel to Meeker. From Meeker, travel west on Highway 64 approximately 20 miles to County Road 5 (Piceance Creek Road). Turn south and travel approximately seven miles to the Dry Fork turnoff, and then three miles east to the site.
