North Cottonwood to South Cottonwood descends from the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness at the Avalanche trailhead. Restroom facilities are available at the trailhead but overnight camping is prohibited. Use caution when crossing Highway 306 due to heavy summer traffic. The trail continues south from the trailhead, crossing Middle Cottonwood Creek. Rainbow Lake is private and closed to public access.
