| Unlike most of Colorado's jagged wilderness profiles, Lost Creek Wilderness is a land of fascinating rounded stone domes and knobs, split boulders, rare granite arches, and tree-lined mountain parks. Its rock formations are among the most amazing in the entire Rocky Mountains. Wilderness elevations range from 8,000 feet to 12,400 feet. Lost Creek got its name from its habit of disappearing several times into rock piles and reappearing later downhill.In the Tarryall Mountains, toward the southern end of the wilderness, lives one of Colorado's largest and healthiest bighorn sheep herds. Black bears, deer, elk and bobcats share the region. Vegetation in the area ranges from Lodgepole pine, aspen, spruce, fir and Bristlecone pine to alpine tundra. The northern section contains most of the Platte River Mountains and the Kenosha Mountains. About 100 miles of trails exist including the Colorado Trail which passes through the area. |
