Best Time To Visit: Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area is open year-round. Fees: There are no fees to enter this area, but hunting/fishing permits will require a fee. Accessibility: This area is not handicap accessible. Rules: Users of wildlife areas are reminded to check current hunting, fishing, and land use regulations when planning to use an area for any purpose. Camping is prohibited. Fires are prohibited.Fishing prohibited in rearing ponds to protect endangered fish.Hunting permitted with shotguns, hand-held bows, and muzzleloading rifles.Hunting prohibited on Saturdays, except on opening weekends of small game and water fowl seasons. All other Saturdays, hunting restricted to youths 15 and under and their mentors. Only one mentor per youth. Mentors must accompany youth, be over 18, and comply with hunter education requirements.Waterfowl hunting permitted only from blinds as posted. Permit required for specific blind and no more than four hunters per blind.Directions: To reach Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area from Grand Junction, travel west on Interstate 70. Exit Interstate 70 at Fruita (exit 19) and go one mile south on Highway 340 to the entrance on the right. It is well marked with signs. | |
