In the past, Highland Trail started at Elk Park and followed the Highland toward Sawtooth Mountain. Since there is no public right-of-way through private property and Forest Road has followed portions of this trail, the trail now begins at the end of Forest Road 430. Some people prefer to use the Hunters Lake Trail (Forest Trail 800) which goes straight toward the Stairsteps. The Stairsteps are another scenic attraction of the Weminuche Wilderness.
This 9.5 mile one-way trail has a beginning elevation of 10,500 feet and an ending elevation of 12,200 feet. This trail is rated as "moderate" and receives "light" usage.
