| Located on the Uncompahgre National Forest, Dry Mesa Dinosaur Quarry is one of the most famous dinosaur localities in the world. Seventeen different genera of dinosaurs have been discovered at this site since 1971, as well as a number of other fossils, including pterosaurs, birds, crocodiles, fishes and mammals.Guided tours begin at the Dry Mesa Quarry parking area trailhead. Visitors must provide their own transportation, lunch, snacks and water. The gravel and dirt roads leading to the quarry are suitable for high clearance two-wheel drive automobiles when dry. However, when wet, the dirt roads leading to the quarry become muddy and dangerously slick.A professional paleontologist will guide visitors on their visit, exploring the history of the quarry and its specimens during an easy 1/4 mile hike over a period of two hours. |
