Crater Lake is a deep lake surrounded by steep rock walls. Crater Lake is not actually in a volcanic crater. Old-timers used to call it Hyslop Lake. The lake contains brook trout and some small mackinaw.
Fishing pressure can be heavy as this is a popular area.

Facilities: There are no facilities available at Crater Lake.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Crater Lake.

Best Time To Visit: Crater Lake is open year-round.

Fees: There are no fees to visit Crater Lake.

Accessibility: Crater Lake is not handicap accessible.

Rules: A permit for the Crater Lake Travel Zone is required. Camping is permitted in designated campsites only.

Directions: To get to Crater Lake from Alamosa: Start out going northwest Highway 160, take the Crater Lake exit. Crater Lake is located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness and can be reached via the Pawnee Pass Trail from the east and the Cascade Creek Trail from the west. It is about 7.7 miles to the Crater Lake Trail from the east and about 6.3 miles from the west. From this junction it is approximately 1.2 miles to Crater Lake.
