Flowing from the San Juan Wilderness in southern Colorado north of Chama New Mexico to the Rio Grande on the New Mexico-Colorado border, the Conejos River provides fly fishing anglers excellent rainbow and brown trout fishing.
Guest Ranches, fishing lodges and camping areas along the Conejos' River path offer the summer vacationer the ultimate high country mountain vacation experience.
Nearby towns of Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico are home to the historic narrow gauge steam powered Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Tickets may be purchased in Antonito or Chama for this spectacular mountain railroad train ride.
Fly fishing is not the only activity on the Conejos River. Numerous hiking and mountain biking trials originate on the Conejos' banks, climbing through alpine meadows and Aspen forests to the San Juan wilderness peaks.
Elk, mule deer and beaver are plentiful along the Conejos.

Facilities: There are at least four different campgrounds that are located along the Cojones River. Each of these campgrounds provides a variety of facilities.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to visit Conejos River.

Best Time To Visit: Conejos River is Normally Accessible: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend (NOTE: Fluctuates with seasonal weather).

Fees: There are no fees to visit the Conejos River.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Much of the Conejos River travels through the Rio Grande Forest. There are a variety of rules to consider when visiting a National Forest. Please contact the local Forest Ranger for more specific information.

One 4-mile stretch of the Conejos River, from Aspen Glade Campground upstream to Menkhaven Lodge, is restricted to artificial fly-fishing only. This area is managed as a wild trout fishery and is considered one of the finest in the nation. No stocking is done in this area.
The Lake Fork of the Conejos River from the Rock Lake outlet upstream to the headwaters including Big Lake is restricted to artificial fly fishing only and all cutthroat trout must be returned immediately to the water. This restriction is in force to protect the Rio Grande cutthroat.
The rest of the Conejos River is open to anglers using legal rod and reel method. Be sure to check current regulations for any other restrictions.

Directions: To get to Conejos River from Alamosa: Directions from Forest Road 250: Forest Road 250 provides access from the Pinnacles to Platoro Reservoir. Forest Road 247 and Trail 712 provide access from Platoro to the headwaters.
