Coke Oven State Wildlife Area covers a meadow near the base of Stellar Peak. A row of antique coke ovens stands at the edge of the meadow from the coal mining operations of the early 1900's. This area is best known for its black bear hunting.

Facilities: Primitive camping is permitted in Coke Oven State Wildlife Area.

Reservations: Reservations are needed or accepted at Coke Oven State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Coke Oven State Wildlife Area is open year-round.

Fees: There are no fees to enter a State Wildlife Refuge. There are fees to obtain fishing and hunting licenses. Please contact the Denver office for further information.

Accessibility: This area has limited handicap accessibility.

Rules: Users of wildlife areas are reminded to check current hunting, fishing, and land use regulations when planning to use an area for any purpose.

Directions: To get to Coke Oven State Wildlife Area from Glenwood Springs: Go east on Highway 82 to Basalt. From Basalt, go 30 miles east on USFS Road 105, (Fryingpan River Road) to property. Property is not signed; it is the first meadow after the road turns north. Look for the coke ovens on the south side of the meadow.
