Surrounded by aspen in the Rio Grande National Forest, the little-used Cathedral Campground is a nice spot with good views of Cathedral Rock. It is composed of two large loops along Cathedral Creek. The left hand loop features a large meadow and a few open sites. The right hand loop has a dense Aspen and spruce (including Blue) woods and a more rustic feel.
John Charles Fremont's winter camp is nearby. He attempted an ill-fated expedition across the Rocky Mountains for a transcontinental railroad route in late 1848.
There are 33 individual campsites with tables and fireplaces (firewood is limited). The maximum vehicle size is 35 feet.


Facilities: Restrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, and drinking water are provided at Cathedral Campground.

Best Time To Visit: Cathedral Campground is generally open from May through October.

Fees: An overnight camping fee does apply.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Do not cut, carve, or damage any live trees. Camp only in those places specifically provided or marked. Driving or parking off road is not permitted.

Directions: To get to Cathedral Campground from: Pagosa Springs: Travel northeast on Highway 160 to County Road 18. Turn north and proceed about 1.5 miles to Forest Service Road 650. Continue north for about three miles to Forest Service Road 640. Turn northwest and continue for seven miles to the campground.

From Alamosa: Travel northwest on Highway 160 to Del Norte. From Del Norte take US Highway 160 west for approximately nine miles to County Road 18. Turn north and proceed about 1.5 miles to Forest Service Road 650. Continue north for about three miles to Forest Service Road 640. Turn northwest and continue for seven miles to the campground.
