Canyons of the Ancients covers almost 164,000 acres of high desert in southwest Colorado. This area has the highest density of archaeological sites in the nation, most of them representing the Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) culture. Visitors will find some intact structures, but most sites appear as rubble mounds to the untrained eye.
Canyons of the Ancients is accessed by maintained gravel county roads, and by the Trail of the Ancients Historic and Scenic Byway which links the Anasazi Heritage Center, Mesa Verde National Park, and Hovenweep National Monument to similar locations in northeast Arizona and southeast Utah.

Facilities: No facilities are available at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Facilities can be found in Cortez or Dolores.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted at Canyons of the Ancients.

Best Time To Visit: Canyons of the Ancients is open year-round.

Fees: There are no fees to enter this area.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Stay on existing roads and trails. Scars on the desert landscape heal slowly and increase soil erosion.

Never touch painted or plastered walls, petroglyphs, or pictographs. Skin oils damage them.
Avoid picnicking in archaeological sites.

Directions: Canyons of the Ancients is located in the Four Corners region of southwest Colorado, 3 miles west of Cortez. To get there, take Highway 160/ CO-789, turn right to stay on Highway 160.
