The scenic Blue River is one of Colorado's Gold Medal fisheries. The tail waters of the Dillon Reservoir provide rather consistent fishing. The river is easy to wade and has good access.
The Blue River has abundance of Mysis shrimp from of the reservoir, which may be a contributing factor to why the fishery has an unusual number of large trout. In the winter months the river freezes downstream at about the five-mile mark starting in mid to late December. Between late March and November the entire river fishes well.
The river host Rainbows, Browns, Cuttbows and Cutthroats, with some rainbows and browns near the thirty inch mark.
