Black Powder Pass Trail begins at the section house. Walk northeast from this building along the dirt track. The hike's goal is a saddle between Boreas Mountain (south) and Bald Mountain (north). The route follows a stream drainage to its destination at 12,159 feet.
The track cuts through a meadow with stumps from old timber cuts, and then continues along a forested slope to the treeline. The hike can be extended by climbing another 1,000 feet to the 13,082 foot Boreas Mountain summit or 13,684-foot Baldy.
This is a moderately difficult 1.7-mile trail, with elevations ranging from 11,500 to 12,159 feet.

Directions: To reach Black Powder Pass Trail from Breckenridge, travel to Boreas Pass on Forest Road 33. The trail begins along the dirt track, Boreas Ditch No. 2, northeast from the section house.

To reach Black Powder Pass Trail from Leadville, travel north on State Highway 91 to Interstate 70. Travel on Interstate 70 to State Highway 9. Take State Highway 9 to Breckenridge. From Breckenridge, travel to Boreas Pass on Forest Road 33. The trail begins along the dirt track, Boreas Ditch No. 2, northeast from the section house.
