Basalt State Wildlife Area

Basalt State Wildlife Area is located in Eagle County and contains 4,706 acres of wetlands. It includes four miles of riverfront property, a big game winter range, meadows, mountains, canyons and gulches providing a diverse habitat for wildlife. Recreation includes wildlife and birdwatching, fishing, hunting, photography, day hiking, picnicking, an outdoor shooting range open to public, and camping only during big game seasons.

Facilities: There are no facilities available at Basalt State Wildlife Area. Restrooms are provided near Christine Lake during the summer season.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted to visit Basalt State Wildlife Area.

Best Time To Visit: Basalt State Wildlife Area is open year-round.

Fees: There are no fees to enter a State Wildlife Refuge. There are fees to obtain fishing and hunting licenses. Please contact the Denver office for further information.

Rules: 

State Wildlife Area Regulations
  • Alcohol is prohibited on the shooting range.
  • Boating is prohibited on Christine Lake.
  • Camping only 3 day prior to, during, and 3 days after big game seasons.
  • All fires prohibited.
  • Dogs are prohibited.
  • Mountain bikes are prohibited.

Directions: To get to Basalt State Wildlife Area from Aspen: Travel north on CO-82 to Basalt. From Basalt, drive .5 miles west on State Highway 82, then turn north on the first dirt road.

Glenwood Springs Travel south on CO-82 to Basalt. From Basalt, drive .5 miles west on CO-82, then turn north on the first dirt road.
