Baldy Trail begins in a small meadow adjacent to Forest Highway 16. Proceeding east, it crosses the East Fork of the Williams Fork and at mile 0.4 enters the Routt National forest. The trail climbs as it heads southwest through stands of aspen and open parks.
Turning to the southwest the trail traverses the lower slopes of Baldy Mountain. By walking a short distance uphill at mile 2.0, visitors will have an excellent view of Pyramid Station. The trail continues southwest, ascends a slide at mile 3.1 and enters the wilderness at mile 3.5. Several old sheep trails diverge along this route. To stay on the main trail, follow the signs.
For the next mile, the trail remains in the open as it heads east to intersect a prominent ridge defining the southern boundary of Bunker Basin. Crossing the headwaters of Baldy Creek, the trail begins a steep ascent by a series of switchbacks at mile 4.4 and enters a spruce-fire forest at mile 4.6. The trail continues across the ridge, crosses a bog area at mile 5.1 and reaches its high point of 11,200 feet. It intersects with trail 1117 just below Windy Gap.
This 6.8 mile trail is located within the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. The beginning elevation is 8,264 and the ending elevation is 10,845 feet.
